Quahogs Mercenaria mercenaria are a type of bivalve ( which means” two shelled”) gastropod ( which means “stomach- foot”). which live under sand or silt in the intertidal zone of the ocean. They are also called Hard Shelled Clams and are considered quite tasty.

Bay ScallopsArgopecten irradians– are also bivalve gastropods.  But, unlike clams, they are active swimmers. A line of blue eyes along their mantle alerts them to danger, and by quickly clapping their shells, they swim away backwards.

Third Realm‘s bivalve models both feature hard epoxy shells which are each approximately 2 1/2 by 3 feet across with with a heavy duty carrying case and soft sculpture internal organs.Just like the real animal,   both models have mantles, muscles, gills, stomach and digestive organs, reproductive organs and hearts. See how Quahogs dig with their large foot and extend their siphon above the sand. Look at the Scallops‘ blue eyes and the large muscle it uses for swimming.
